As December beckons, bonfire night starts November off with a bang while thoughts turn to Christmas and our towns begin to sparkle with festive lights. Early booking is recommended for many of the Santa events. Take a look below at our calendar of Events in Whitby November.
It’s not too late to get out on your bike even! Enter the new Top of the Rock Gravel Sportive (12 November) organised by Sutton Bank Bikes starting 1000ft up on the spectacular Sutton Bank escarpment, take a grand tour across moor ‘n dale on gravel trails (from 17 to 37 miles).

Bonfire night bangs
The theme for this year’s Skinningrove Bonfire (4 November) is pigeongrove celebrating the rich history of pigeon keeping and racing in and around the village. This year’s bonfire sculpture made is yet to be revealed but expect a spectacular bonfire and firework display from 7pm. Roads into the village are closed from 5pm. Car sharing, walking and public transport recommended. Full details of parking and road restrictions will be available on their Facebook page. The event is free but relies on public donations to keep going.
There’s bonfire fun and fireworks at Helmsley (4 November), with food stalls and bar. Gates open at 6 pm, bonfire is lit at 6.30 pm and a firework display to music begins at 7 pm (Baxtons Lane, Helmsley YO62 5HT). Tickets available on the gate.
Christmas is coming…
As Christmas fast approaches, head to one of the area’s great houses all decked out for the season’s festivities. Burton Agnes Hall opens its doors from 14 November to 23 December, with festive events running alongside, including Christmas Craft Days, or experience Christmas at Nunnington Hall from the Georgian era to the war years (weekends only from 18 November until 17 December). At Castle Howard a host of angels will be found throughout the grand state rooms along with floral creations and beautiful decorations from 18 November until 23 December.
Complementing Briganta’s WinterArt, exhibiting in the Inspired by… gallery (17 November until 21 January 2018), our very popular annual Christmas Craft Fair returns (18-19 November). We’re also holding a Christmas shopping weekend at our Sutton Bank National Park Centre (25-26 November), with live music, children’s activities and crafts.
Whitby Christmas Festival returns (17-19 November) with live music, the official Christmas lights switch-on and a firework display. In Marina Front car park find market stalls with plenty of gift ideas, artists, crafts, hot food and drinks throughout the weekend.
The popular NSPCC Christmas Fair returns to Duncombe Park (16-18 November) where you can enjoy more than 50 stalls selling a range of festive gifts. Nearby, Beadlam Grange Farm Shop’s annual Christmas Gift Fair in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance returns 17-19 November. Free entry and a chance to browse more than 30 stalls in their covered yard.

Searching for Santa Claus?
Little ones can visit Father Christmas at Nunnington Hall (weekends only from 25 November until 17 December; booking is advisable).
He’ll be at Castle Howard too, sharing stories and magic with his wizard friend by the fireside for A Daytime Audience with Father Christmas or join the exclusive Enchanted Evening with Father Christmas, a fireside tea party and candle lit trail to discover Father Christmas and his friends (both 25-26 November; pre-booking required). Any visit to the house at Christmas also include a peek into the world of Father Christmas in the Magical Christmas Garden.
Other great events and exhibitions
On 3 November, join us at the Inspired by… gallery as The North York Moors Chamber Music Festival holds an Exhibition Concert. Enjoy an energetic and passionate classical programme featuring The Oculi Ensemble performing classic quartets by Haydn, Mendelsshon and Beethoven.
Head to Dalby Forest for Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society (SARAS) stargazing event (3 November), your last chance until 2 February; these are free to attend (charitable donations welcome).
Also in Dalby Forest, there’s a chance to explore not only our own solar system, the moon and objects from deep space on one of Hidden Horizon’s two-hour Stargazing evening events (10 and 24 November). Booking is essential (Adults: £12; Under 16s: £8 inc. hot chocolate/snacks).
See a flying demonstration of tiny owls by candlelight at one of NCBP Duncombe’s Winter Owl Evenings (every Saturday until Christmas, 7-9.45pm), including a 2-course meal and mulled wine. Pre-booking required.
Malton Forest Rally returns to the area on 5 November, with rally stages around Cropton, Langdale and Dalby Forests. Please note that some of the walking and cycle trails may be closed or diverted for the day.
