(Takes about 2 hours to complete from the cottages. The walk can be shortened by leaving your car by the cricket club, or even shorter by leaving your car in Ruswarp – see notes below)
Head out of the cottages and turn left onto Eskdaleside.
Turn left onto Coach Road and follow down hill turning off to the right before the bridge towards Salmon Leap pub/hotel, following the road round past the station.
Turn left onto Echo Hill. The cricket ground will be on your left (a great place to walk your dog round also with a beck that flows around the edge of it)
If you’d rather drive to here leave your car on the left on the grass verge.
Turn left and walk up the hill towards some cottages turning right towards the cottages. Note you are walking behind the cottages to a lane with a gate going into the field.
The walk is signposted Esk Valley walk marked with yellow arrows. Head into the field following the path. At the end of the field turn right following the footpath signpost again
towards the end of the field look for the arrow pointing right going over style following the signs
Follow the field around the edge into the corner, over the stile or through the gate and a view of Whitby Abbey is ahead of you.
Follow path around the edge of the field, heading right towards the style in the bottom of the field. Over the style and up slight incline towards the next stile.
Cross the middle of the field up the hill down the other side towards the farm and over another stile.
Turn left, following footpath to Ruswarp. Cross to bottom of farmers yard, and and again you are following yellow Esk Valley signs through gate and down the hill.
To next style or through the gate heading downwards towards stile in the bottom of the field and then cross the railway taking care.
If you time it right steam train maybe passing, turn right onto a path following the railway which is on your right.
At Chainbridge cottage,
cross right over railway and up by cottages towards the main road. Turn left and cross the road to the footpath turn left downhill into Ruswarp.
Head over the bridge and before the railway turn right through a gate following a path with the railway on your left. This path takes you to Whitby. There are great views of the river and viaduct and brings you out at the marina in Whitby.
A shorter walk into Whitby is to park your car in Ruswarp and pick up the path.
Refreshments were had at the Stables, at Cross Butts after we had returned and picked up our car, a welcome end to a very enjoyable day out, especially enjoyed by Maisie!!
ENJOY YOURSELVES,
Joe and Geoff XXX
